If Richardson is Judas, James Carville Must be Mary Magdalene (or is it Mary Matalin?)

As the designated hitman following Bill Richardson's endorsement of Barack Obama, James Carville came out guns blazing.

The cameras of the networks had barely stopped rolling on Richardson - who had grabbed the attention of the nation last week in declaring his affection and backing for Obama - when Carville fired on Richardson.

Carville called Richardson, who comes off as one of the nicest, gentlest figures on the national political scene, a Judas for not picking Hillary Clinton as the right person for the Democratic nomination.

You realize here, don't you, that Carville is implicitly saying Hillary Clinton is the new Jesus Christ?

There's a certain gall there, no? Especially considering that Washington figures of recent history have never really seemed Christ-like in their behavior.

And if we're going to go picking characters in the Bible, who suits Carville?

Maybe Mary Magdalene [left photo is Carville, right is depiction of Mary Magdalene]. She was the one who was (according to informed tradition) was selling herself in an old profession before she eventually came around and embraced Christ.

Selling oneself seems a fit analogy because for Carville, because it seems unlikely that Carville fights out of true belief in any political philosophy.

After all, who can accept that Carville is a serious believer in the values of the Democratic Party when his wife, Mary Matalin, has been a top adviser for Bush and Cheney and continues to be a voice for their party and their policies?

It's virtually beyond belief.

It's beyond belief especially, for this very reason of the hypocrisy of it call (he's unfaithful to somebody here, isn't he?) that people take Carville seriously.

And Carville's suggestion that Richardson should have supported Hillary Clinton because her husband had given Richardson high appointments a decade ago is politics of the most crass, worst order.
