Bainbridge Street is named after William Bainbridge (born May 7, 1774, in Princeton, New
Jersey; died July 28, 1833). He was a Commodore in the United States
Navy and known for his victory during the War of 1812. In his younger
years he commanded a trading ship that engaged in commerce with the
British West Indies, although navigation laws prohibited American
trading vessels from doing business with the British West Indies.
