Irving Place is named after Washington Irving (born in New York City, April 3, 1783; died November 28, 1859), who was an American author of the early 19th century best known for his short stories, including “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle.
Irving was one of the first American writers to earn acclaim in Europe, and was said to have encouraged authors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allen Poe.
