Lewis Avenue is named after Morgan Lewis (born in New York City, October 16, 1754; died April 7, 1844), who was an American lawyer, politician and military commander.
After serving in the Revolutionary War, Lewis completed his law studies and was elected to the New York State Assembly and Senate.
He later served in as New York State Attorney General, and as Justice and Chief Justice of the New York State Supreme Court.
He was also elected as the governor of New York. He also fought in the War of 1812, served as President of the Historical Society of New York, and helped found New York University.
