So now it's come down to a police officer, having racially profiled and arrested one of the nation's leading black scholars -- for breaking into his own house! -- is refusing to apologize for it.
“I know I’m not apologizing. It’s not that I’m digging in my heels, I just have nothing to apologize for,” Crowley told the Boston Herald.
The officer's obstinacy is galling to many.
Virtually all the world, except for a criminal court judge, has agreed that Sgt. James Crowley was abusive. Even President Barack Obama, normally reticent on issues of race, said at his press conference last night:
"The Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home."
So now an outstanding question is whether Harvard will insist action be taken against the officer who abused its professor.
