Could this possibly be true, that all the Brooklyn Democratic members of Congress are supporting Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary?
I mean, there's strong anti-war sentiment in Brooklyn and the rest of the city. And you would think that some of our U.S. Reps would be supporting one of the stronger anti-war candidates, like -- well, name almost any of them -- but Dennis Kucinich and Barack Obama come to mind.
But, no, I'm told, all of the local Congressmembers -- ALL of them -- are on the record supporting their New York Senator.
This is so striking, of course, because the words that come to mind thinking of Clinton's position on the Bush's Iraq war (and his possibly coming war with Iran) are: lukewarm, cold, calculating, but certainly not passion and certainly not peace.
Going back more than six years, Clinton seems to have gone along with Bush on every war initiative he's pushed, initiatives based on deception and deceit.
Given this background of Clinton's, it's unsettling that even Yvette Clarke has signed on with her. Clarke, after all, supported efforts to impeach Bush and Cheney. And at a recent Brooklyn speak-out (sponsored by the Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats) Clarke was perhaps the most forceful speaker (Nadler and Weiner were among others there) against the administration's war policies.
But there Clarke was, on a Clinton release announcing support for the Senator.
Maybe the late speak Sam Rayburn's remark about how to succeed in Congress still holds true: "Around here, you've got to go along to get along."
Le plus ca change.
