The race to replace Brooklyn District Attorney just got hot.
A New York Times story by Frances Robles says protesters will march against D.A. Joe Hynes this week. It will represent the biggest challenge yet to Hynes in his effort to be re-elected.
"At least two protests have been planned this week against Mr. Hynes, who is in the midst of a primary campaign for a seventh term. On Tuesday, relatives and friends of inmates seeking to have their convictions overturned are planning a rally outside CBS to protest its decision to offer Mr. Hynes a reality TV show. Another protest is scheduled for Thursday outside Mr. Hynes’s office on Jay Street in Brooklyn."
This is a big deal because heretofore Hynes has appeared unbeatable. These criticisms of him could turn into big cracks in his perceived invincibility.
(The sentences above are from a Times story today about an allegedly rogue cop, Louis Scarcella, now retired, who let "witnesses" use crack and prostitutes as he got them to testify against innocent defendants. Story is here.)
In another development that is sounding warning bells for long-time Brooklyn D.A. Hynes, challenger Abe George recently announced he's won the backing of the New Kings Democrats.
(The announcement of the New Kings Democrats is pretty bare-boned.)
Hynes is also being challenged by Kenneth Thompson, who represented the African maid who said she was sexually assaulted by French political bigwig Dominique Strauss-Kahn. (Thompson's Web site is here.)
Regarding Hynes' deal with CBS, questions have been raised about the ethics of the TV company coooperating with a political candidate to produce a reality show about the candidate.
(See Abe George criticism of it here on previous Brooklyn Ron post.)
