These are fascinating times, the worst of times and the best.
Bed-Stuy is beset with foreclosures, unemployment and other painful effects of the current recession. But the community is also showing a political vibrancy that is refreshing and spring-like.
We looked around and, behold, half a dozen hopefuls were standing in the candidates' ring, declaring themselves intent on winning the City Council seat now occupied by Councilman Al Vann.
Incumbency is a powerful force to have on one's side; but the challengers have shown an optimistic exuberance that, in fact, is the quality that took Barack Obama to the U.S. presidency.
