Gates Avenue is named after Horatio Lloyd Gates (born in Maldon, England in 1727; died in 1806), who was an American Revolutionary War general. He was most well known for commanding at the victorious Battle of Saratoga, as well as for being overwhelmingly defeated by General Cornwallis in the Battle of Camden. Gates owned slaves throughout his life, but towards his later years he freed his slaves at the urging of his friend John Adams, and moved to New York.
