Jefferson Avenue is named after Thomas Jefferson (born in Albemarle County, Virginia on April 13, 1743; died July 4, 1826), who was the third President of the United States (1801-1809) and principal author of the Declaration of Independence.
Jefferson was one of the most influential founding fathers for his promotion of the ideals of Republicanism in the United States.
Although Jefferson was outspoken about the immorality of slavery, he owned many slaves throughout his lifetime.
In his “Notes on the State of Virginia”, he openly expressed his belief that Black people were inferior to white people, and that there was no way for Blacks to live in society as free people.
