Willoughby Avenue is named after Samuel Willoughby, a prominent landowner and dry-goods businessman in Brooklyn, who came to the United States from England at the age of nineteen and had the good fortune to marry Margaretta Duffield, daughter to one of Brooklyn’s most affluent families. Willoughby founded the Brooklyn Bank in 1832.
